Dropfoot is a condition that makes it difficult to lift the foot up. People with drop foot may describe their foot is slapping on the ground or they feel like they are catching their toes. A common cause of drop foot is compression/injury of the common peroneal nerve that controls the lifting of your leg. This can occur after an injury such as an ankle sprain or a fall. A pinched nerve root in your spine can also cause drop foot. Dr. Nelson performs a physical exam in which they check your leg for muscle weakness and numbness in certain areas. Treatments can include bracing, PT, Nerve stimulation or surgery.
I was referred to Dr. Nelson, by my previous podiatrist, after I developed neuropathy, atrophy, foot drop and had two nerves entrapped in my lower right leg. As a registered nurse, caregiver and avid walker, my feet and ability to walk are essential. I had terrible pain, restless legs, was always tripping and my ability to walk was severely impacted. My ability to drive was also affected. I had done physical therapy that wasn’t helping. I am sensitive to medications, so either nothing worked or what would be prescribed wasn’t suitable.
Dr. Nelson performed surgery to release the two entrapped nerves. After surgery, medications to help with pain were limited. Given this fact, I opted to have four laser treatments performed by Dr. Nelson or her staff. This helped decrease pain and bruising. I had more bruising from my surgical IV than my two surgical incisions. Another option Dr. Nelson gave me was to use a Nexwave device. I did IFC to my calf muscle twice a day for 60 minutes, each session. IFC was for pain management and worked well. I used the NMES setting twice a day for 20 minutes each session. This was to help stimulate my nerves, which improved my foot drop. Nexwave was very helpful in my recovery. I also did physical therapy twice weekly for two months.
Following Dr. Nelson’s post operative orders, I regained feeling and mobility in my foot relatively quickly. My restless legs and pain resolved. I am no longer tripping, fearful to walk outdoors or drive. I am so thankful for the extensive training and knowledge that Dr. Nelson has. Dr. Nelson and her staff excel in their knowledge, patient care, communication, and willingness to help patients achieve the best outcome.
