Our daughter, Mallory, fractured her right ankle and after meeting with Dr. Nelson we were advised that surgery would be required. As parents, we were very concerned about our teenage daughter having surgery. I have been a patient of Dr. Nelson for about 10 years. She is a great doctor who cares about her patients and does an amazing job. She has saved my life twice. First – I have no feeling in my feet and I got an infected toe and if Dr. Nelson had not operated on my toes I would have died. Then second – I was taking painkillers for my nerve pain. During an appointment Dr. Nelson noticed that I was acting strange. I had taken my medicine accidentally twice. She sent me to the emergency room saving my life again. Most recently she did surgery to decompress the nerves on my leg. I have had neuropathy pain of my legs for 30 years. This surgery significantly improved my pain and I have regained some sensation as well. She is my favorite doctor.

It had been 8 months since my midfoot sprain, and I had seen 3 podiatrists and completed nearly 20 weeks of physical therapy. The pain and swelling persisted in my foot and ankle even though the imaging studies showed “nothing wrong.” I was told to walk normally and return to activities, but I couldn’t- I dreaded even basic errands. I sought out Dr. Nelson as she had done a previous surgery of mine. Within the first appointment at FAS Ames, I knew I made the correct decision. Dr. Nelson spent time listening to me to better understand my pain and the limitations it was causing. It was determined that I had 2 entrapped nerves, and I had to have surgery to release them. Today I am one year post injury and I can finally walk without pain and fatigue. Dr. Nelson gave me my life back! I appreciate her expertise and patience with problem solving. Her office staff is always smiling and helpful. I even referred my mom to FAS Ames, and we are on the road to recovery together!

I had suffered an injury to my Achilles tendon as a result of sports activities. The injury made it painful to walk and perform normal daily movements. Dr. Nelson prescribed medication and ankle supports to help the tendon heal and regain comfortable normal movement. Following approximately 6 weeks of rest and limited activity with my overall goal of being able to return to active sports; Dr. Nelson recommended laser therapy to help assist with the recovery time. The 3 weeks of laser treatments were painless and help me regain normal ankle movement. I am glad to say that I am back out playing sports again. Dr. Nelson and her staff are very genuine. I never felt rushed through any appointment, and they always took time to thoroughly answer my questions. Thank you Dr. Nelson.

I came to Dr. Nelson to address multiple large patches of plantar warts on my foot. I had seen another podiatrist in town for over a year without any results. It seemed hopeless. After my initial visit and expressing my concerns about not feeling heard by my last doctor; Dr Nelson reassured me that since it was my foot that I would have a say in my treatment. Knowing it was not an overnight fix we worked our way through a couple of treatment techniques until we found what worked for me. After 6 months my foot looks like it never had a wart on it. Dr. Erin Nelson is an angel in disguise! She helped me when other doctors said there was nothing that could be done to help my foot/ankle. Her surgery helped me “feel” my foot again! I’m so thankful to have received a referral from Dr. Tim Holcomb to see her. She performed a decompression of my peroneal nerve in my left leg/ankle. After 48 hours I could “feel” my foot again. It had felt numb and tingly for three years after I broke my ankle in 2020. I have foot drop, and nerve and ligament damage from the injury. Dr. Erin Nelson is amazing! I cannot thank her and her staff enough for all they have done to help me. My function will never be 100%, but she helped me regain feeling and some function. Dr. Erin Nelson was a marvelous doctor who LISTENED to my concerns and problem. Something that I did not have from others I had seen prior. 20 years ago I received a diagnosis of chronic compartment syndrome that led to 3 failed surgeries along with a continuation of chronic pain for many years. Dr. Nelson

Dr. Nelson is the founder of Foot and Ankle Specialists of Ames. She is a lifelong Iowan and grew up in Dubuque. She went to the University of Northern Iowa and received a degree in biology then went to Des Moines University for medical school. After completing a residency at St John North Shores in Harrison Township, Michigan she and her family returned to Iowa. She practiced at McFarland Clinic for 8 years and then returned to her alma mater, Des Moines University, for 4 years. She was an assistant professor and the Clinical Chair of the DMU Foot and Ankle Clinic. She decided to return to the Ames community to open her practice where she and her family still live. She continues to serve as part-time faculty at DMU.
